    Panther Ausf.F Empty Panther Ausf.F

Post by lockie Mon Apr 13, 2015 1:23 am

Here's what I've found in "PANZER TRACTS No.5-4 Panzerkampfwagen Panther II and Panther Ausfuehrung F"
According to the article we may see that two Panther F theoretically could take part in the battle for Berlin.
    Panther Ausf.F Pzf12
In September 1945, without access to records, representatives from M.A.N, replied to the question: Were several Ausfuehrung F employed in action? M.A.N, never completed any Panther 1 Ausfuehrung F. Daimler-Benz had delivered chassis for the Ausf.F but outfitted with the Ausf.G turret and with steel-tire, rubber-cushioned road-wheels mounted in staggered pairs.
When interrogated in July 1945, representatives from Daimler-Benz were not asked and did not state if any Panther Ausf.F had been completed. However, the report stated that samples of the Schmalturm had been evacuated from Berlin for shipment to the U.K. and the U.S.A. Photographs taken after the war show four incomplete Ausf.F chassis mixed in with Ausf.G chassis in the assembly line at Daimler-Benz Werk 40, Berlin-Marienfelde. Daimler-Benz was to have completed 2228 (250 Ausf.D, 675 Ausf.A, and 1303 Ausf.G) Panthers before starting on the Ausf.F. After converting to Ausf.G assembly, Daimler-Benz had completed only 1004 Panthers by the time production ceased on 24 April 1945 (about 300 short of the original transition target goal).
As proven by a report listing their Fgst.Nr., all the Panthers issued to the next to the last unit were still Panther Ausf.G assembled at Daimler-Benz Werk 40. Therefore, if a few Panther Ausf.F had been successfully completed, they would only have been issued on 20 through 23 April 1945 to the II. Abteilung/Panzer-Regiment 2 for immediate employment in defense of the Berlin area.

    Panther Ausf.F Pzfass
Panther Ausf.F armor hulls in the welding jigs at Ruhrstahl in April 1945 still had the glacis plate interlocks with the supersturcture side plates cut perpendicular to the side. With the exception of the 40-mm and 25-mm thick roof plates, these Panther Ausf.F hulls being completed at Ruhrstahl were still identical to Panther Ausf.G armor hulls. The hole around the superstructure vent was countersunk for fitting a cylindrical guard and there were still holes for mounting rear bump stops but no holes for rear shock absorbers. Track pin return plates were welded on at the armor suppliers.

Did German officer's receive these Panther F tanks when they went to the "Daimler-Benz (Berlin plant-Marie Felde)" looking for vehicles/tanks to continue the fight?

On the night ahead 14 April 15, 1945, the men experience the devastating bombing of Potsdam and pull then immediately continue to Glienicke. Some officers go into the Alkett works, where the assault guns are made, as well as the Panther works in Marie Felde and with the most incredible means it is made that the department again Panthers and assault guns replaced, as it leaves the factory buildings.

The translation is googlish: here it is in mainstream English( my own translation):

During the night of the 14th to the 15th of April , the men experienced the devastating bombing of Potsdam and thus decided to head for Glienicke. Some officers travelled first to the Alkett plant where the "stugs ' are manufactured and then to the Panther manufacturing plant in Marienfelde. Thus, against all odds, the Detachment was once more equipped with vehicles that were driven straight out of the assembly lines.

That does, Pz.V F could see the battle near Berlin. Perhaps, those machines were blown up to avoid capturing.

Pz.V F could see the battle near Berlin. Perhaps, those machines were blown up to avoid capturing.

Or did these few Pz.V F's also have G model turrets. as the captured US model has and at the time no one noticed the difference of these wreaked or abandoned Panther's after the battles had ended?

frinik...  thank's for the interpretation. Very Happy

A bit more info concerning the Panther Ausf.F and the Schmalturm Turret and a Panther training film.

    http://jtrowbridge5.smugmug.com/Pantherinmuseums/Panther-Schmalturm-Turret/

    http://www.oocities.org/desertfox1891/pzpanther/pzpanther-F.html

lf Daimler-Benz did manage to complete a few Panther Ausf.F between 20 and 23 April 1945, their operation would have been impaired because key components were not available for the Schmalturm, including the range finders and gunsights.

The Panther Ausf.G turret would not fit on the Panther Ausf.F chassis without altering the turret race and turret drive, and this at a time when there were constant power failures. lf this had been done at Daimler-Benz, as representatives from MAN stated when interrogated directly after the war, the end result would have been just like any other Panther Ausf.G, but with sliding hatches and an MP44 ball moun

    http://www.oocities.org/desertfox1891/pzpanther/pzpanther-II.html

Directly after the war, without access to supporting documents, in response to the question if any Panther II were ever employed in combat, MAN representatives replied: Two experimental Panther II were ordered, although only one experimental chassis was completed. It is possible that this single experimental vehicle could have been employed in combat.

    Panther Tank military training film.

One item brought out during this training film [starting at 1:26-1:53], is that the tank crew carried spare vision glass blocks for the vision ports in case it was damaged during combat and shows the commander replacing one.
