    M18 Hellcat is tankdestroyer, it engage enemy tanks in ambush. Without roof commander has better view to battlefield and it´s lower, lighter and faster( Hellcat is very fast).

    I guess the idea was that it was not expected to fight infantry and to remain hidden from mortar/artillery. Plus the Allies had air superiority when the M18 was used. It was more like a highly mobile anti tank gun than a tank.
