Tanks in the movies - Page 2 Empty Re: Tanks in the movies

Also saw "Fury" and would give it a 7 out of a 1-10 grade. A few items of the movie were pure Hollywood, but overall it was a decent storyline and made movie.

The tank's used on loan from the Bovington Tank Museum were the Tiger and the M4A2E8 Sherman tank that was used for the Fury tank, with ten Sherman's used during filming.

The final battle scene came from the Audie Murphy story I believe...

    http://standwheretheyfought.jimdo.com/alsace-2010-holzwihr-where-audie-murphy-won-his-moh/

On January 26, Murphy and Company B found themselves on the outskirts of woods facing the German village of Holtzwihr. The day dawned miserably cold and uncomfortable as the small American force waited tensely for an attack. Finally, six German tanks supported by infantry began moving toward them from the village and quickly put two American tank destroyers near Murphy’s company out of action. Murphy sent his men back, but he stayed put with his field telephone. He was only 20 years old, and it did not look like he would live to see 21.

With his phone, Murphy called in artillery fire on the advancing German infantry. German tanks were approaching on his sides, but Murphy climbed onto a burning tank destroyer—which could have exploded at any second—and began firing its .50-caliber machine gun. He killed dozens of German soldiers, forcing the tanks to fall back due to lack of infantry protection. One German squad sneaking up on Murphy’s right got as close as 10 yards from him before he detected the threat. He shot the whole squad down. Somewhere along the way, Murphy got hit in the leg, but he kept fighting until he ran out of ammunition. Having killed about 50 Germans, he returned to his company, where he refused medical help and instead rallied his men to make a counterattack. The Germans were forced to retreat.

Later, Murphy heard that the enemy had stayed away from his burning tank destroyer because it looked ready to blow up. “I do not know about that,” he answered in his memoir, putting himself back into the scene. “I am conscious only that the smoke and the turret afford a good screen, and that, for the first time in three days, my feet are warm.”

Tanks in the movies - Page 2 Empty Re: Tanks in the movies

Quote... I don't think the Americans equipped their tanks with 17 pdrs. Only 1 in 4 British tanks had it by war's end.

The US Army did have some Firefly's tanks with 17 pdrs, but not many as the US Army had it's own tank destroyer's which were the M-10 & M-36 tank destroyer's.

The M36 was a U.S. tank destroyer, nick named "TD's" by the American troops and the "Jackson" by the British. Mounted upon a modified Sherman tank chassis, it was the only American armored vehicle to mount a 90mm gun comparable to the German 88mm gun. The tank destroyers were intended to counter German Panzer assaults. Their tactics were called "shoot and scoot". They took a hiding position and shot at the approaching German tanks and then immediately moved away before the Germans could shoot back.

The 90 mm M3 gun made a lot of flash and noise, roused dust, so the commanders often had to dismount and track the target outside of the vehicle with binoculars. The M3 offered better antiarmor performance than the 3 inch, but it wasn’t an almighty big cat killer. The 703rd TD had conducted tests against captured Panthers in December, 1944, and they found, that 90 mm armor piercing projectiles still bounce on the sloped glacis armor, although they penetrate the front turret and the nose plate to a less extent.

    A Bridge Too Far, 1977
This is excellent movie, but all armors are American production.
    I guess this is `Panther`.

    Ardennen 1944 (Attack), 1956
This movie affected me very strong. Unfortunately, all German armour were made in USA.
This is supposed to be "Tiger I" on the base of "Sherman".

OH my God what a terrible conversion! It looks fake and horrible.

I am suspecting the Panther in ' A Bridge too Far ' may be a German Leopard 1 tank which they converted...

    Movie "Road to Berlin" 2015.
According to the movie plot It is June 1941.

This tank looks as Pz.IV H
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 F31Tanks in the movies - Page 2 F32

It looks as the same one, but without gunbrake (Pz.III L with schurzen?)
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 F33

This supposed to be Pz.IV F2.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 Image

KV-2 I think with a fake turret and chassis from JS-3.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 Kv2

    T-34/43 (Sormovo turret)
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 Image

As we can see all techniks are quite recognizable from the period 1943, except KV-2.

That's a classic although again they made an anachronism by using T34/85 which had not yet been manufactured nor deployed on the East Front in Kuban (autumn 1943 )when the action is set. The lack of preserved T34/43 is responsible. They did the same thing in the German 1994 film Stalingrad.

Still a great film thanks to James Coburn and Maximilian Schell.

Cross of iron got some cools scene with T-34s:

It's a 1977 american movie about a group of germans trying to survive in late 43, with an NCO (James Coburn) who hate officers and decorations. It take some liberties with history sometimes, but it's a good movie nonetheless

Another good movie, less know that cross of iron, is Talvisota. It is a 1989 Finnish film about the Winter war. You can see some T-26's, and why the molotov cocktail was really appreciated by the finnish:

    Teaser "T-34".

T-34/85 looks like a real vehicle.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 06t34_000134708

Unfortunately, all "Panthers" are rendered tedious Though, 3D model looks nice! It is Panther "G".

I hope that at least one replica has a real chassis.

I wonder what does this detail?
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 05pz_000126708

Soviet tanker looks in a good shape. He is a very precisely shaved and dressed to kill.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 04shav_000029958

He doesn't use gunsight reticle as a measurement to calculate a distance.
He only relays on his a very sharp eyes.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 07rtcl_000146166

German tanker has a similar view, but he has a binocular with reticle.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 03bin_000036375
It is a very interesting measurement! I never saw anything kinda that.

This episode started as a confrontation: 1xT-34/85 vs 6xPz.V "G". Soviet tank has only six shells. I'm pretty sure he will shot down all the "cats" happy

    Here's a teaser of the movie "T-34"(2018).

According to annotation it is based on the real action. I guess it is Lavrinenko's crew. He was a Soviet tank ace and destroyed ~50 German tanks. I think it is November 1941, near Moscow.
T-34/76 has a very unique additional ekran on the frontal armor and a characteristic winter camo presented as a a net on the turret.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 T_01 Tanks in the movies - Page 2 T_01a Tanks in the movies - Page 2 T_02

Perhaps, this tank was rebuild in Belarus.
I think T-34/76 was produced by plant N183 before autumn 1941. As we can see a loader has a gunsight.
The German tank I suppose it is Pz.III ausf.J or L with KwK38 gun, though it looks like KwK39. Insignia it is 11th Panzer Division summer 1943.
Tanks in the movies - Page 2 G_01 Tanks in the movies - Page 2 G_02

I think movie's Director tried to show some features of the real tanks tedious
Anyway, teaser looks nice! popcorn happy

Best attempt I've ever seen of a WWII movie from the German side...

    1993's Stalingrad.

Not in the trailer, but in the movie you get to see some Tigers, Panthers and a few halftracks as well as Russian T-34s.

It seems to me - it is a real Pz.I ausf.A! Incredible! Unfortunately, the episode was too short to have a more detailed look. This is movie "Wolyn" 2016.

Yeah and it's full of inaccuracies T34-85 one year before they were introduced , Panthers which were not operational until 6 months later and Tigers which never took part to the battle of Stalingrad. Even Enemy at the Gates was more accurate than this POS.
